A frenulum is a piece of tissue that secures or restricts the motion of a mobile organ in the body. There is a frenulum that attaches your upper lip to the gums, while another
connects the lower lip to the gums. A frenulum that is too short or thick, will cause problems in speech patterns, tooth misalignment, and gum recession. This condition is
often referred to as having “tongue-ties” or “lip-ties.” When the frenulum disrupts movement, growth, or development, corrective action is necessary to resolve the
situation.
A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure to simply remove the connective tissue from under the tongue or the upper gums. The procedure is very successful and causes minimal discomfort. Some people describe the feeling after having a frenectomy as feeling like they have a pizza burn. The healing usually takes 7-10 days.
